September at Browns, a place you need to be. We are excited to announce our hunting and fishing packages beginning September 1st. Combine an early fall adventure to hunt pheasant, dove, prairie birds and finish it off with time on Lake Oahe fishing early fall walleye, large pike, and salmon. The combination trips are perfect for any size group or business gathering, where between our two lodges we can host groups of up to 28 people. Enjoy a day of bird hunting then end the day on a beautiful fishing trip with one of our tournament guides, or a leisurely cruise around Whitlock Bay on a spacious pontoon, just kick back and relax.

Our dove hunts are fast and furious, at times it’s almost shooting in self defense. It’s not Argentina but close, you’ll still want to bring plenty of shells. The doves feed on sunflowers and wheat stubble that span over thousands of acres. Birds feed heavily in the early evening needing water soon after they feed. Our hunts are set up near waterholes where birds congregate giving you non stop shooting, here’s where it becomes fast and furious.

The early season pheasant hunt is also part of our cast and blast package, with a typical hunt of 3-5 birds per hunter. The hunts are preserve style, where we can accommodate groups of 2-12 hunters. These hunts of course differ from our wild bird hunts where we hunt Sharp-tail Grouse, Prairie Chicken, and Hungarian Partridge. Our wild bird hunts are also part of our early season package, where the prairie bird hunts begin September 1st on tribal land and the state wide season beginning September 14th.

Our cast and blast packages will run from September 1st-Ocotber 12th, we will again continue our cast and blast packages November 15th – March 31st. Join for winter fishing and pheasant hunting through March 31st. The winter angling and dark house spearing is as good as you’ll ever find.

Fishing on Lake Oahe is second to none, with an 8 fish per day walleye limit the fun is unmatched. Great guides who are knowledgeable of the lake and how to find and catch fish are sure to put a smile on your face, their boats and gear is the top of the line. It’s our goal to provide you with the best possible experience, therefore we prefer 2 fisherman per boat. It’s a special trip for sure! A bird hunt, and first class fishing all topped off with a fabulous social and evening meal of fresh fish, dove rumaki, poppers and succulent pheasant strips are what trips are made of. Saturday Seminar begins – 9:00 AM Introduction of trainers and day description

9:30 – 10:30 Dog evaluations begin.  Look at individual dogs to see their natural ability and degree of training.

11:15 -1 PM   Yard work, Obedience, Whoa training individual dogs, E-collar introduction

2-3  Finish Yard work and obedience

3-5  Field work, bird work, handling drills. E-collar

NEW FISHING REGULATIONS FOR THE UPCOMING 2013 SEASON WALLEYE LIMITS ARE NOW 8 FISH DAILY, THREE DAY POSSESSION LIMIT OF 24 WALLEYES. DAILY LIMITS MAY HAVE FOUR FISH 15″ AND OVER, AND FOUR FISH UNDER 15″ WITH ONLY ONE FISH OVER 20″.

Just out the front door of our lodge and cabins, you will experience world class fishing on the Lake Oahe, Missouri River in some of the most unique landscapes in the prairie.

Trophy Walleye, Sauger, Small Mouth Bass, Northern Pike, Salmon, Trout, Catfish are all plentiful. Walleye’s average from 14″ to 22″ daily with larger fish taken regularly. Northern Pike and Salmon will get 20lbs plus. This incredible fishery is as good as it gets, and just doesn’t get the recognition it so rightly deserves! We have the finest quality of buffalo in the world. This is a World Class once in a life time bison hunt for many big game hunters. The vastness of over 50,000 acres of rolling prairie hills and size of the herds is priceless……..

The trophy hunt is for one of our large breeding herd bulls. They will weigh anywhere from 1800-2000 pounds. They range from 5-10 yrs of age. They are a very large very unique animal. You cannnot find animals of this quality and size just anywhere. You are allowed to select an animal from this group for your trophy.

The hunter gets the entire animal with the trophy hunt. The gun size required for this animal is nothing smaller that a 270 rifle. Hand guns, black powder and other types of guns need to be cleared with ranch personnel. We require a 50% deposit to hold a date for your hunt. The meat is included with the hunt. We will skin and cape the animal in our slaughter plant and quarter the meat for you. This hunt is also available with archery. The hunter gets the entire animal, meat included, with the archery hunt. Hunts off horseback require a additional $2,000.00. The season for this hunt is Oct.-Jan. 1. No license or permit is required.

This 3 night/2 day hunting package is a all inclusive package; five star lodging in a very private individual comfortable king size cabin suite with own bathroom, fireplace and 48″ flat screen TV, breakfast and lunch daily with snacks in the field and in lodge, professional staff, professional guide, and a incredible gourmet dinner with a finely stocked open bar over looking the beautiful Lake Oahe.

Over the past year we have experienced some of the driest conditions in years on our property and surrounding areas. With that being said many of the cattle ranchers are in trouble with not enough hay and grass in their pastures. Allot of CRP has been harvested for hay to help the ranchers along with many of the grass lands. The first few weeks we have seen many birds and had much success in the grass but as the season matures here going into our third week of the season we are seeing allot of the birds flying right towards the row crops for their cover from predators and plenty of food. The last few groups we had here at Brown’s Hunting Ranch we are seeing many covey’s of birds along the edges and in the row crops.

It seems that when the evenings and nights get cooler and the first couple of hard frost kills all the crickets and grass hoppers these birds are migrating directly to the row crops. Going back ten years ago, there wasnt many row crops west of the Missouri River. In fact there was’nt much for farming period west of Aberdeen and Redfield South Dakota. This area was more pasture land than farm land back ten years ago. And these sharp-tail grouse have addapted to the different food and cover that is now available for them. As the world continues to grow I see more and more grassland and pasture land becoming farmland and the way we hunt these magnificient native birds will continually change.

The first few groups that have come and hunted with us in this early season has had good success with many opportunities at sharp-tails, prairie chickens and hungarian partridge. The crops are starting to be harvested and we are seeing plenty of wild birds on our properties. If you have booked a hunt with us we look forward to having you come and experience our ranch.
